Jerk Plantain & Halloumi Burger

About this recipe

This Jerk Plantain and Halloumi Burger is a bold vegetarian burger with a proper Caribbean twist. Golden fried plantain, grilled halloumi and jerk sauce are layered into a toasted bun with salad, slaw and creamy dressing.

It is sweet, salty, spicy and incredibly satisfying. The plantain brings natural sweetness, the halloumi adds bite, and the jerk sauce ties everything together with warmth and flavour.

Chef’s Tips
Use ripe plantain with yellow skin and black patches for the best sweetness. Halloumi is best served straight from the pan while warm and soft. Toasting the buns helps stop them becoming soggy.

Best Jerk Centre Sauce to Use
Duppy Conqueror — perfect for balancing the sweetness of plantain and the saltiness of halloumi.

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a frying pan and cook the plantain until golden on both sides.
  2. Remove and set aside.
  3. Brush the halloumi slices with Duppy Conqueror.
  4. Grill or pan-fry the halloumi until golden and lightly charred.
  5. Toast the burger buns.
  6. Layer lettuce, tomato, red onion, plantain, halloumi and coleslaw into each bun.
  7. Add an extra drizzle of jerk sauce if desired.
  8. Serve immediately with lime wedges.
